DSSC and UII co-hosts Online Lecture Series on AI and its application to Agriculture

The online lecture series on Artificial Intelligence and its Application to Agriculture by Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) and Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) took place via Zoom on June 7, 2024, under the initiative of Dr. Ana Marie Matalines, IARO Head.

The first topic was about Application Development for Today’s Generation in SMART Agriculture. “Technology is a foundation for a sustainable future,” Dr. Felomino Alba, DSSC Lecturer remarked.

He further discussed technology adoption, data-driven decision making, client-based approach, agile & collaborative environment, optimized procedures, and sustainable future in agriculture, emphasizing on the evolution of agricultural technology projects by the government over the years and some advanced agriculture equipment such as automated machinery, satellite imagery, drones, and many others. He also tackled the role of data in farming decisions.

The second topic was about Large Language Models (LLMs) for Text Analysis. “We know that the text data in agriculture is growing, commonly unstructured which makes it challenging to extract the meaningful insights from the data,” Dr. (cand.) Ahmad Fathan Hidayatullah mentioned.

According to Professor Hidayatullah, using results from text analysis will help entities to make decisions, and even uncover hidden patterns which drive innovation in the agriculture domain. LLMs are now a state-of-the-art approach for text analysis, helping in sentiment analysis, text classification, and many others. It can also develop a Chat Bot and Question Answering System to assist farmers with crop management expertise, providing accurate and relevant answers to different agricultural concerns.

This lecture series was attended by Dr. Siverlyn Camposano, DSSC Vice-President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), faculty, staff, and students from UII and DSSC.
