Transforming SMART Agriculture: Wrapping up a Four-Part Online Series Lecture on Agricultural Innovation
Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) and Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) successfully concluded the online lecture series on Artificial Intelligence and its Application in Agriculture on June 26, 2025 (Chapter 3) and July 2, 2024 (Chapter 4) via Zoom under the initiative of Dr. Ana Marie Matalines, IARO Head, and the speakers from DSSC and UII.
Professor Rhea Mae L. Perito, lecturer from DSSC, discussed generative artificial intelligence (GEN AI) in SMART agriculture. She delved into the history of Genai and its development, creating two deep learning models: discriminative and generative artificial intelligence. She highlighted that "the future of agriculture, intertwined with generative AI, holds exciting prospects for transformative innovations," but with ethical considerations and safeguards for AI.
Meanwhile, Dr. Syarif Hidayat, lecturer from UII, delivered a captivating presentation on data-driven solutions for sustainable profitability in shrimp farming startups. Dr. Hidayat focused on business intelligence, a field that converts data into practical and useful insights. Dr. Hidayat utilizes a business intelligence technique to tackle the difficulties encountered in shrimp farming. He proposes conducting preliminary market research before proceeding with product development or commercialization, as exemplified by applying business intelligence (BI) to shrimp farming.
“Explore more the key beauty of AI in daily life, particularly in improving farm practices," Prof. Nel Panaligan, lecturer from DSSC, remarked in his session on Discriminative Artificial Intelligence: Machine Learning Models for Smart Agriculture. He explored the concepts of machine learning and supervised learning in the context of agriculture, along with their practical applications that assist in agricultural practices.
This lecture series was attended by Dr. Augie E. Fuentes, DSSC College President, Dr. Wiryono Raharjo, Vice Rector for Partnership and Entrepreneurship at UII, faculty, staff, and students from UII and DSSC.
