August 9, 2024 — Faculty members and students gathered at the DSSC Mini Theatre for a significant discussion on the role of biodiversity, taxonomy, and peacebuilding in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Spearheaded by DSSC’s Advanced Research for Education - Governance and Social Development (DARE-GSD), headed by Ms. Rikka Bianca Condes, MS, this event aimed to explore the vital connections between these fields and their impact on global sustainability efforts.
Mr. Elorde Crispolon Jr. PhD, gave a comprehensive presentation on "The Foamy World of Spittlebugs," highlighting recent advancements in the taxonomy of Philippine Cercopidae. His talk covered the latest progress in identifying and naming species, developing taxonomic keys, and reconstructing phylogenetic trees, shedding light on the evolving understanding of these unique insects. Following this, Mr. Jason Pucot, MS, shared valuable insights from Japan and the IATSS Forum in his presentation on "Biodiversity and SDGs." His discussion explored the crucial role that biodiversity plays in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), drawing from a range of international perspectives. He highlighted both the benefits and challenges associated with integrating biodiversity into SDG strategies, providing a nuanced view of how different regions approach these global goals and the impact of biodiversity on sustainable development efforts.
Lastly, Kloyde Caday, MA, examined "The Nexus Between Peace Building and Biodiversity," highlighting the critical link between peace initiatives and biodiversity conservation. His presentation underscored how fostering peace and preserving biodiversity are intertwined and crucial for achieving sustainable development. Caday illustrated how efforts in one area can support and enhance outcomes in the other, demonstrating that both are essential for long-term global sustainability.
