Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) Bamboo Team headed by Project Specialist Dr. Graciela Caballero, successfully conducted a Bamboo Weaving Training under the SkillsUpNet Philippines (SUN PH) Program – Phase 2, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), on October 1–3, 2026, at the DSSC – Regional Coffee Innovation Center (RCIC) through hybrid setup.
The training aimed to enhance the participants’ bamboo-weaving skills through hands-on learning, practical demonstrations, and exposure to innovative bamboo designs and techniques. It brought together four bamboo growers from Barangay Soong, beneficiaries of the Bamboo is Life Project and four bamboo growers from Barangay Osmeña, beneficiaries of the Bells Hub Project.
Also participating in the training were three officers from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)–Digos, in coordination with Dr. Queenie Lyn G. Almerez, Director for Extension; three faculty members and students from Serapion Basalo Memorial Colleges, Inc. (SBMCI), Kiblawan; and one architect from Davao City. Representatives and participants from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) also joined some portions of the training through live online participation.
The training provided an opportunity for participants to develop and strengthen their skills in bamboo weaving through actual hands-on activities and the creation of various bamboo products and designs.
On the final day, Dr. Augie E. Fuentes, College President, met with the weavers and participants and witnessed the presentation and showcasing of their finished bamboo products featuring different designs and techniques developed during the training.
The activity served as a valuable avenue for skills enhancement, knowledge sharing, and the promotion of bamboo-based livelihood and enterprise development among the participating communities and partner institutions. This activity also supports Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
