Three Students from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Davao Region Campus arrived at Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) on June 15, 2026, for a two-week immersion in laboratory research and scientific methodology. The deployment followed a partnership agreement signed between the two institutions on January 15, 2026.
Working through the college’s Research Center for Emerging Pollutants (RCEP), the students will gain direct experience in research practices, laboratory techniques, and the analytical methods used in scientific work. The program pairs them with researchers and faculty at the college and includes guidance on identifying and shaping research problems.
The immersion exposes the PSHS students to the day-to-day work of a research facility. During their stay, they will observe ongoing research initiatives, use laboratory equipment, and take part in collaborative activities alongside college researchers. Through this exposure, the PSHS students learn about the practical things that research institutions run into, including the technical, economic, and environmental aspects that come with operating a research center.
The partnership is meant to connect secondary and higher education by giving promising science students an early feel for research environments and research-like thinking. For DSSC, the arrangement gives a chance to work with capable young scientists and also to reaffirm the college’s dedication to moving science and technology forward across the region.
Officials at both institutions see the program as a method to spark curiosity about research among secondary students, and to show how scientific work ties back to community problem-solving.
The initiative supported Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by providing students with research-based learning opportunities beyond the classroom. It also contributed to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through exposure to scientific research and laboratory innovation, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through the collaboration between Davao del Sur State College and the Philippine Science High School Davao Region Campus in advancing science education and research development.
