In line with its 7th Founding Anniversary celebration, Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) conducted the Nutrition Health Talk on February 19, 2026, at the DSSC Mini Theater.
The activity formed part of the College’s anniversary Health and Wellness initiatives spearheaded by the Wellness, Technology, Health, and Care (WellTecHCare) Research Center, under the leadership of Mr. Jerome Ferdinand O. Balaga, Research Center Head. The program aimed to promote nutrition literacy and awareness of healthy dietary patterns through “Pinggang Pinoy,” the Filipino food guide, as an initial step toward developing research-based and evidence-based policies on campus food and nutrition.
The event featured resource speakers from the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Davao Region and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Mr. Dick David T. Ongking of NNC discussed proper food proportions using “Pinggang Pinoy” and the “10 Kumainmends,” which are part of NNC’s programs promoting proper nutrition among Filipinos. He also shared practical strategies for measuring food intake using the hand model and encouraged mindful meal planning and preparation.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jayson O. Molina of DSWD presented the current nutrition situation in the Philippines and discussed the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2023-2028 (PPAN) 2023–2028. He showed that food choices depend on knowledge, which determines health results. He emphasized that universities/colleges need to transform their food environments while establishing policies that create accessible, healthy food options and restrict unhealthy products.
The event included photographic contributions from students, faculty members, and staff who participated in the weeklong DSSC Campus Food Shots challenge by taking pictures of their balanced meals throughout designated dining times, which included breakfast, lunch, and snack breaks. The activity promoted healthy eating practices to the academic community members to cook balanced, nutritious meals from their campus locations.
The initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3) Good Health and Well-Being, and (SDG 4) Quality Education by improving health knowledge among academic community members.
