Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) joined the opening program of the UNESCO Field Evaluation Mission for the proposed inscription of Mount Apo as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp), on August 17, 2026, at the Bagobo Tagabawa Cultural Village in Tibolo, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
Organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) XI through the Mount Apo Natural Park-Protected Area Management Office, the field evaluation is part of the process of assessing Mt. Apo’s potential for international recognition based on its geological, biological, and cultural significance.
DSSC was represented by the Vice President for Admin and Finance Dr. Jun D. Nasibog Jr., and Supervising Administrative Officer Engr. Clara A. Acebes, Ph. D, who attended the program where they featured indigenous rituals, cultural presentations, and community testimonials that highlighted the importance of local participation in protecting and promoting Mt. Apo’s natural and cultural heritage.
The field evaluation will continue until August 21, 2026, with activities covering communities and areas across Davao del Sur, Cotabato, and the surrounding localities.
DSSC’s participation provides the College with an opportunity to work alongside government agencies and local communities in efforts to protect Mt. Apo while promoting its sustainable development. This also supports various Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities); SDG 13 (Climate Action); SDG 15 (Life on Land); and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
