DSSC Inaugurates Diagnostic Molecular Laboratory for Emerging and Infectious Diseases

Davao del Sur State College (DSSC), through the Project and Development Office (PDO), successfully conducted the turnover ceremony for the project entitled “Establishment of Diagnostic Molecular Laboratory for Emerging and Infectious Diseases” on May 13, 2026, at the DSSC Main Campus.

The ceremony marked the official completion and operational transfer of the facility, which aims to strengthen the institution’s capability in detecting infectious diseases through advanced diagnostic technologies while supporting research, instruction, and extension services.

Funded through the 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the project was awarded to Magnum Builders with a contract cost of P8,999,000.00.

The completed facility consists of specialized laboratory spaces designed to accommodate diagnostic and research-related operations. It is composed of three major divisions: the Parasitology Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, and Molecular Laboratory.

The program commenced with the blessing and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the laboratory building, followed by the program proper.

DSSC President Dr. Augie E. Fuentes delivered the opening remarks, expressing her gratitude for the completion of the project that will help strengthen the college’s scientific research capabilities and support the public health initiatives in the province and the region.

PDO’s Engr. Bon Andrey Armamento presented the project overview, discussing the development and operational purpose of the laboratory facility.

Davao del Sur Provincial Governor Hon. Yvonne Roña Cagas also graced the occasion and relayed her congratulations to the college and its governing body, and relayed her enthusiasm for the upcoming projects that the college may produce through these newly established laboratories.

Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology Program Head Shiela Mae G. Bolambot, DVM, also shared a message explaining the importance of these new laboratories and their functions, recognizing their contribution to animal health, disease prevention, food safety, and community welfare.

Meanwhile, Provincial S&T Director, Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) Leslie Peart M. Cancio-Dy, shared technical insights on molecular laboratory operations and services, focusing on its importance as a diagnostic laboratory in disease surveillance and scientific advancement.

The activity concluded with closing remarks from DSSC Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Luciano D. Nasibog, who congratulated the team behind the project on a job well done. It was followed by an official viewing of the whole facility.

The establishment of this project shows DSSC’s support for initiatives that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 for Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 4 for Quality Education, and SDG 9 for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
