Davao del Sur State College signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the City Government of Digos and the Barangay LGU of Sinawilan on August 27, 2026, at Megan’s World Function Hall in Aurora Extension, Digos City, committing the college to the Adopt-A-Mangrove Project in Punta Biao, Barangay Cogon.
The signing of the MOA was made during the 3rd Joint Quarterly Meeting of the City Greening Council and the Digos River Watershed Management Council, a meeting of government agencies, military and police units, religious leaders, barangay officials, environmental advocates, indigenous peoples representatives and academic institutions to evaluate ongoing environmental programs and set priorities for the rest of the year.
College President Dr. Augie E. Fuentes signed on behalf of DSSC, with Digos City Mayor Josef Fortich Cagas signing for the city government and Barangay Captain Hon. Bobby M. Palmero representing the Barangay LGU of Sinawilan. Extension and Community Services Director Dr. Queenie Lyn G. Almerez also attended in support of the activity.
Under the agreement, DSSC commits to plant and grow mangroves in its assigned area for three years, replacing dead mangroves at its own expense and working with the city and barangay governments to protect and maintain the site. The project aims to restore a former forest area once populated with mangrove trees and other marine plant species.
The MOA signing supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) through direct environmental action in mangrove rehabilitation, SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through the restoration of coastal ecosystems in Digos City, SDG 15 (Life on Land) through reforestation and biodiversity recovery, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through the partnership between DSSC, the City Government of Digos, and the barangay government of Sinawilan.
