Empowering Futures: DSSC Equips PDLs with Financial Literacy and Accounting Skills

Davao del Sur State College (DSSC), through its Extension and Community Services Office (ECSO), launched its extension initiative titled “Life behind Bars: Project 4 – From Cell to Success: Cultivating an Entrepreneurial Mindset and Financial Acumen” at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Female Dormitory Digos City on April 10, 2026.

The program aimed to strengthen financial literacy and basic accounting skills among Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). It provided practical knowledge to help them manage finances and prepare for reintegration into society.

The College of Business Education and Governance faculty members Asst. Prof. Cecile C. Lofranco, Instr. Roy R. Molina, and Instr. Nhel Jay M. Artajo served as resource speakers for the program, which was spearheaded by the ECSO.

The session covered how to record transactions, make a budget, and prepare simple financial statements. It aimed to help PDLs improve their financial skills, especially since many have limited education and come from low-income backgrounds.

The program went beyond technical lessons by teaching discipline, accountability, and smart decision-making. These values help participants build confidence and independence as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration.

This program showcases the College’s support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 for Quality Education, SDG 8 for Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 10 for Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 16 for Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
