Davao del Sur State College (DSSC) showed real preparedness and resilience after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Southern Mindanao on Monday, June 8, 2026. The earthquake affected campus operations, including the scheduled ISO Recertification Audit of the College.
Following the suspension of work and classes ordered by the City Government of Digos, College President Augie E. Fuentes took necessary action to suspend the usual college operations and activities to ensure everyone’s safety and be properly looked after. This meant faculty members, employees, and even stakeholders were prioritized first.
The College’s Crisis Incident Management Team (CIMT), along with concerned offices, carried out assessments for campus facilities and infrastructure. From the initial inspections, a generally safe DSSC was observed, shifting the College’s attention to precautionary steps and ongoing monitoring of campus conditions.
With a record of zero casualties, the recent ground shaking showed how well the college’s disaster preparedness and safety awareness efforts are working in practice. The calm actions helped make sure everyone on campus stayed safe during the incident. It highlighted the strength, flexibility, and readiness of the DSSC community, as if they were prepared in more than one way. The situation also reinforced the college’s commitment to safety, disaster readiness, and operational resilience.
The incident emphasized the value of disaster preparedness in educational institutions and reflects the principles of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which promotes resilience and disaster risk reduction, and Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), which includes providing safe and secure learning environments.
